Sarah Abo makes an emotional return to Today — but it was the tiny guest beside her who stole the spotlight

A very special reunion

Sarah Abo has made her much-anticipated return to the Today couch — but she wasn’t alone.

The Channel Nine presenter was back with her colleagues on Friday, just four weeks after welcoming her first child, bringing baby son Sonny along for his very first television appearance.

Bundled safely in his mother’s arms, the newborn immediately became the centre of attention as Abo reunited with the Today team and viewers following an emotional few weeks away from the show.

The return marked a particularly special moment for the 40-year-old presenter, who had been forced to begin maternity leave earlier than planned after experiencing health complications during her pregnancy.

Abo and her husband of more than a decade, Cyrus Moran, welcomed Sonny in mid-July.

‘I’m so obsessed with my darling boy’

Clearly still wrapped up in the newborn bubble, Abo admitted she had become completely consumed by motherhood.

“I’m so obsessed with my darling boy,” she said.

The presenter described the dramatic shift in perspective that came with becoming a mother, saying her priorities had changed almost overnight.

“You just go, ‘I don’t care about anything else’,” she said.

“And you just keep staring at them and the noises they make and the faces they make change all the time.”

For Abo, those quiet moments with Sonny have quickly become the most important part of her new life.

The sleepless nights have already begun

Abo revealed her family had settled into a surprisingly good routine, with Sonny feeding and sleeping well.

But there was one thing her return to breakfast television had unexpectedly prepared her for: the early mornings.

“This job does definitely prepare you, and everyone said that!” she joked.

“I thought I wasn’t getting much sleep doing this, but let me tell you.”

Despite the exhaustion, Abo made it clear she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

“Sleep is very welcome, and you don’t get much of it when you have a little bubba, but it’s all worth it.”

From maternity leave to the Logies red carpet

While Abo is clearly enjoying her first weeks as a new mum, there is already another major date on her calendar.

The presenter is preparing to attend the 2026 Logies on August 16 — this time without Sonny by her side.

Abo joked that a “superhero effort” was happening behind the scenes to get her ready for the big night, with Melbourne designer Sonia Cappellazzo creating her gown.

After weeks away from the spotlight, she said she was looking forward to being reunited with her Today colleagues for the occasion.

“I think it’s a nice opportunity to be there with you guys all as well,” she told Tom Steinfort, Sylvia Jeffreys and Jayne Azzopardi.

A big night ahead for Abo and Today

There is plenty at stake at this year’s Logies.

Today has been nominated for Best Current Affairs Program, while Abo herself is in the running for the Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter.

Her return to the Today couch therefore comes at a particularly significant moment — but on Friday, the awards and television nominations were almost beside the point.

After a difficult pregnancy, an unexpectedly early departure from the show and the arrival of her long-awaited baby boy, Abo’s first appearance back on television was ultimately about something much simpler.

She was back — and this time, she had Sonny in her arms.
