Nine thought the biggest decision was over
After a period of major change at Today, Channel Nine has settled on a new hosting combination for the program: Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort.
But the transition may not be as straightforward as it first appeared.
Jeffreys is expecting her third child, meaning the new Today lineup will eventually have to navigate another period of change when she takes maternity leave.
And that has put an unexpected name back into the conversation — Samantha Armytage.
The former Sunrise host became a familiar face behind the Today desk while Sarah Abo was away, and her experience made her an obvious short-term option whenever Nine needed cover.
Yet Armytage has now made her own position much clearer.
Samantha Armytage has already drawn a line
Armytage has repeatedly indicated that she does not want to return to breakfast television permanently.
Speaking after Nine announced Jeffreys and Steinfort as the new Today pairing, the 50-year-old broadcaster said her recent appearances were always intended as fill-in work rather than a move back into the format.
“This was never about me going back into breakfast television,” she said.
Armytage has spent around 15 years in breakfast television, including almost eight years as the weekday host of Seven’s Sunrise. She said returning to the demanding early-morning schedule permanently would feel like moving backwards at this stage of her career.
“I feel like going back into breakfast TV would have been going backwards, and I don’t want to do that at 50,” she said.
She also made clear that she was happy for Nine to choose a new generation of talent.
“I think Sylvia is a fabulous choice,” Armytage said, describing the appointment as a “wonderful changing of the guard”.
So where does that leave Nine?
This is where the story becomes more complicated.
If Nine eventually needs a temporary replacement for Jeffreys during maternity leave, Armytage could theoretically be considered because she already knows the program and has successfully filled in at the desk.
But her own comments suggest Nine should not assume she will simply return whenever required.
That is also the basis of New Idea’s latest report, which cites unnamed television-industry sources claiming Nine’s treatment of Armytage could make her less receptive to another request.
One source described the situation as particularly harsh and claimed Nine could struggle to persuade Armytage to step in again.
Those claims have not been independently confirmed by Nine or Armytage, so they should be treated as industry speculation rather than an established dispute.
Armytage’s relationship with Nine is not simply ending
Despite the speculation surrounding Today, Armytage remains part of Nine’s television lineup.
She continues to host The Golden Bachelor Australia, with a second season planned for 2027.
At Nine’s Upfronts, she also hinted that other projects were coming, telling reporters to “watch this space”.
So her decision not to pursue the permanent Today chair does not appear to represent a departure from the network altogether.
Instead, Armytage has indicated that she wants to move into a different stage of her career rather than repeat the breakfast-TV chapter she has already spent years building.
The Sarah Abo chapter is still being felt
The latest uncertainty also comes after another major change at Today.
Sarah Abo has announced that she will leave Nine and Today at the end of 2026, rather than return to her previous role after maternity leave.
That departure helped trigger the search that ultimately resulted in Jeffreys being named alongside Steinfort.
Reports from New Idea now claim some people within the breakfast-TV industry remain unhappy about the way Abo’s departure unfolded, particularly the timing of the decision.
However, those reports are based on unnamed sources and should be distinguished from the confirmed fact that Abo is leaving Nine.
A new team — but another change already on the horizon
The irony is that Nine has finally announced the new Today pairing just as another practical question begins to emerge.
Sylvia Jeffreys is the new face beside Tom Steinfort — but her upcoming maternity leave means Nine will eventually need to find someone to sit in that chair temporarily.
Armytage might once have seemed like the obvious answer.
Now, her own words suggest the situation may be very different.
She has already spent 15 years in breakfast television. She has filled in on Today. She has experienced both sides of the Sunrise–Today rivalry.
And at 50, she has made it clear that she would rather keep moving forward than simply return to a chapter she considers complete.
That leaves Nine with a question that may not have been part of the original hosting puzzle:
