Samantha Armytage Rules Out Breakfast TV Return, Calling Position ‘Going Backwards’ at 50

SYDNEY — Australian television veteran Samantha Armytage has put to rest any speculation about a permanent return to morning television, declaring that stepping back into the high-intensity arena would feel like a step backward for her career as she hits a major personal milestone.

Speaking exclusively following Nine Network’s official announcement that Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort will take over as co-hosts of the Today Show, the 50-year-old presenter made it clear that her recent temporary stint behind the desk was never intended as a bid for a full-time position.

A Chapter Best Left Complete

Armytage, who spent 15 years dominating morning television—most notably as the co-host of Seven’s ratings powerhouse Sunrise for eight years—emphasized that she has nothing left to prove in the breakfast space.

“This was never about me going back into breakfast television,” Armytage stated. “This was always a fill-in, which I was happy to do when Sarah [Abo] was on maternity leave.”

Addressing the rigorous demands of morning broadcasts, Armytage confessed she was always hesitant about recommitting to the grueling early hours and constant public scrutiny.

“I said right from the start that I have done 15 years of breakfast TV at the highest possible level on such a huge show as Sunrise,” she noted. “I was very much in two minds about whether I really wanted to go back into those hours… Look, I think it’s all worked out for the best. I didn’t need to do it again.”

Endorsing the Next Generation

Rather than harboring any disappointment over the co-host announcement, Armytage enthusiastically endorsed Sylvia Jeffreys, viewing the appointment as an essential evolution for commercial television in Australia.

Describing the lineup change as a “wonderful changing of the guard,” Armytage voiced strong support for rising female leaders in media. “It’s time for some fresh faces. Let’s get these younger female talent onto our screens,” she said. “I wish them all the best. I think they will do a spectacular job with it, and I hope they put up a good fight.”

Armytage’s career in morning television began in 2007 when she co-hosted Weekend Sunrise alongside Andrew O’Keefe. Her performance earned her a promotion in 2013 to Sunrise’s main weekday anchor spot next to David ‘Kochie’ Koch, replacing Melissa Doyle. During her nearly eight-year tenure, she helped maintain the show’s position at the top of national ratings until her departure in March 2021, when Natalie Barr stepped into the role.

After hosting Farmer Wants A Wife for Seven, Armytage made headlines in 2024 by jumping ship to rival network Nine. Her temporary hosting stint on Today granted her a unique distinction in Australian television history.

Samantha also threw her support behind Jeffreys, saying the coveted role should go to a fresh face rather than someone who has already spent more than a decade in the breakfast TV trenches. ‘It’s time for some fresh faces. I think Sylvia is a fabulous choice,’ she said

While she admitted that returning to the morning set was comfortable and effortless—noting she “could do it with [her] eyes closed”—she reiterated that familiarity does not equal ambition.

“We’ve got two Golden Bachelors in season two, so there was a lot more going on,” Armytage teased. “It was a lot busier, a lot more chaos, a lot more drama… which, of course, it’s reality TV. We love that. We lean into that.”
