Long before Rebecca Gibney became one of Australia’s best-known television actresses, she was a young woman falling deeply in love with a rising television personality.

She was 22.

Richard Wilkins was 32.

They were living in different cities, Rebecca in Melbourne and Richard in Sydney, but they had begun a relationship that Rebecca later remembered as something much more serious than a fleeting romance.

She was, by her own description, “madly in love with him.”

She also believed they had a future together.

Then one small gesture changed everything.

The relationship took place in the late 1980s, before either of them had become the familiar television personalities Australians know today.

Rebecca was building her acting career, while Wilkins was establishing himself in entertainment.

Before one of Richard’s flights, Rebecca gave him a rose.

Rebecca revealed the extraordinary story during a 2015 appearance on Nova FM’s Fitzy & Wippa, more than two decades after the relationship itself had ended.

There was one more detail that made the story even more awkward.

The card Rebecca had attached to the rose was still there.

Richard apparently had not realised that the new recipient would see the message.

Rebecca explained that the flight attendant found the card, which revealed where the rose had originally come from.

“It did break my heart”

Rebecca did not pretend that the experience had been painless.

Looking back years later, she acknowledged that the breakup had affected her deeply.

“It was a bit messy for a while because he did break my heart a little bit.”

That admission gave the story a very different weight.

The rose itself was small.

The betrayal behind it was not.

For someone who believed she was building a future with Richard, discovering that he had been seeing someone else brought the relationship to an abrupt end.

But Rebecca eventually found a way to laugh about it

“We’re mates now”

Rebecca explained that the two had continued to cross paths because they worked in similar entertainment circles.

That could have made an old heartbreak difficult to leave behind.

Instead, she said they eventually became friends.

“But no, we’re mates now.”

She also made it clear that she no longer held resentment towards him.

“He’s a lovely guy, and I have no hard feelings at all because he has a good heart.”

At the end of the interview, she even jokingly addressed Richard directly:

“Richard, if you’re listening please forgive me!”

The tone was completely different from the story she had once lived through.

Rebecca’s life moved in a very different direction

By the time she was telling the story publicly, Rebecca’s life had changed dramatically.

She had become one of Australia’s most recognisable television actresses, known for roles in series including The Flying Doctors, Halifax f.p., Packed to the Rafters and Wanted.

She later married production designer Richard Bell, whom she met while working on Halifax f.p.

They began dating in 2000, married in 2001 and have a son, Zachary.

The relationship with Richard Wilkins had become a distant chapter of her younger years.

A painful one, certainly.

But no longer one that defined her.

Richard’s career took its own path

Wilkins went on to become one of Australia’s most recognisable entertainment presenters.

He became closely associated with Nine, covering major entertainment events and interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars.

The man Rebecca had dated in her twenties eventually became a long-running television presence in his own right.

That made their occasional encounters all the more intriguing.
