Karl Stefanovic once admitted his relationship with Ally Langdon was unlike anything he had previously experienced on Today. Their families became close too — but Karl’s candid confession about the effect Ally had on him revealed an unexpected side to their partnership.
Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon’s bond went far beyond the Today desk

Karl Stefanovic has worked alongside a long list of high-profile television personalities during his career, but his partnership with Allison Langdon developed into something noticeably different.
When Karl returned to Today after being away from the breakfast program, Ally later recalled that he had initially lost some of his enthusiasm for morning television.
The pair ultimately decided they wanted to bring more fun back to the program while still treating the serious moments with the weight they deserved.
That approach helped shape a partnership that became known not only for its on-screen chemistry, but also for the friendship developing behind the scenes.
Karl publicly defended Ally

Their closeness became particularly clear in May 2022 when Karl defended Ally during an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
A newspaper report had portrayed Ally negatively after she was not selected to front Nine’s election-night coverage.
Karl strongly rejected that characterisation, describing her as one of the network’s hardest-working people and pointing to her record of major political interviews.
He also criticised the suggestion that she had behaved like a “diva”.
It was a striking show of loyalty from Karl — but their relationship had already become much more personal away from television.
‘It’s a big family’

Speaking to TV WEEK in 2021, Karl explained that Ally had become part of his family’s life as well.
He revealed that she had attended the birthday of his daughter Harper, describing the wider Today team as “a big family”.
For Karl, that atmosphere represented something he had not experienced during his previous years on the breakfast program.
Rather than simply turning up to work together each morning, he said the team genuinely wanted one another to succeed.
Their partners also formed friendships of their own.
Ally and her husband Michael Willesee Jr were photographed spending time in Queenstown with Karl and his wife Jasmine, with the foursome sharing a glimpse of their trip on social media.
Finding the balance between serious and fun

Karl believed part of his and Ally’s success came from understanding when breakfast television needed to be serious — and when audiences simply wanted some lightness.
He explained that establishing credibility and handling major stories properly gave them room to relax and enjoy the lighter parts of the program.
That balance became an important part of their chemistry.
But behind Karl’s praise for Ally was another admission that was perhaps more revealing.
The surprising thing Ally did to Karl
Despite Karl’s many years of live television experience, he admitted Ally’s preparation and professionalism could still make him feel nervous.
“She still makes me very nervous whenever I come in,” Karl said, before praising how prepared and present she was while working.
He even admitted that he could find her intimidating.
Ally, however, quickly played down the compliment, joking that only part of Karl’s description was accurate.
Her response neatly captured the dynamic that had helped make their partnership work: mutual respect, plenty of teasing, and a friendship that had gradually extended well beyond the studio.
