John Farnham’s sons share a moving update on his health as he embraces a very special new role

John Farnham’s sons have shared an encouraging update on their father’s recovery, revealing a touching glimpse into the music legend’s life away from the stage.

The 77-year-old Australian icon continues to focus on his rehabilitation after his battle with oral cancer, with his family saying he is doing well and enjoying precious time with his new grandson.

“Dad’s running around chasing him”

Appearing on Sunrise as ambassadors for Daffodil Day, Rob and James Farnham spoke about their father’s recovery.

Rob said John was continuing to take things “day-to-day”, stressing that rehabilitation after such a major health battle requires time, patience and dedication.

But there is also plenty of joy at home.

James recently welcomed a son, Jet, and said his father has already formed a beautiful bond with his grandson.

“Dad’s running around chasing him around, which is lovely to see,” Rob revealed.

James said the family had been enjoying extra time together after he temporarily moved in with his parents.

“It’s been really nice to live there and wake up every day and see mum and dad with Jet,” he said.

“Dad and Jet have a real special bond, so it’s really cute to see.”

A career that has changed forever

Farnham was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2022 and underwent a marathon 12-hour operation to remove a cancerous tumour.

He was declared cancer-free in 2023, but the lasting physical effects of his treatment eventually led him to announce his retirement from live performances earlier this year.

While he has stepped away from performing, his sons say their father remains committed to his recovery.

And now, another emotional chapter is approaching.

His sons will honour him on stage

Rob and James are preparing for a major tribute concert in Melbourne next month, featuring some of Australia’s biggest musical names, including Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena and Keith Urban.

For Rob, the night will carry an especially personal meaning.

He is preparing to perform one of his father’s songs publicly for the first time.

“I’ve never performed one of my dad’s songs before, especially for him, which is pretty special,” Rob said.

He admitted he is hoping he can make it through the performance without becoming overwhelmed by emotion.

John wasn’t sure about the tribute

Interestingly, the concert almost did not happen.

James revealed that his father initially resisted the idea for months.

The turning point came when Head & Neck Cancer Australia became involved and proceeds from the event were directed towards the charity.

“That was the tipping point for him,” James explained.

“He was able to accept that and it feels like he’s giving back.”

John is reportedly still deciding what role, if any, he will play on the night.

A family turning a difficult journey into something meaningful

As John continues his recovery away from the spotlight, his sons are helping carry his musical legacy forward — while also supporting a cause that has become deeply personal to their family.

Rob and James are serving as Daffodil Day ambassadors for the third consecutive year as the Cancer Council initiative marks its 40th anniversary.

Their goal is to help raise $5.5 million nationwide.

And behind all the music, tributes and fundraising is perhaps the most meaningful update of all:

John Farnham is still recovering, but he is also a dad and grandfather enjoying the simple moments — one day at a time.
