Australian singer and television personality Dannii Minogue has shared an emotional tribute to Johnny Young, remembering the television pioneer who gave her one of the earliest opportunities of her career.
Young, the longtime host and producer of Young Talent Time, died aged 79 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed on Friday.
For Minogue, the loss was deeply personal.
“Johnny Young holds a place in so many hearts, and today my heart is broken,” she wrote on Instagram.
An opportunity that changed everything
Minogue was only eight years old when she joined the cast of Young Talent Time, the hugely popular Australian variety program that Young hosted throughout its 17-year run from 1971 to 1988.
Her years on the program made her a familiar face to Australian audiences long before her later success in acting, music and television.
Looking back, Minogue credited Young with giving her an opportunity that would ultimately help shape the decades-long entertainment career that followed.

She ended her tribute with a reference that longtime viewers would immediately recognise, calling his death “a very sad Goodnight Australia.”
Kylie Minogue remembers the YTT years
Dannii’s older sister Kylie Minogue, who also appeared on Young Talent Time, responded with her own tribute.
“Embedded into all our hearts and memories. YTT 4 Ever and RIP Johnny Young.”
Kylie described those years as formative for her sister and recalled how the people around the show had become like a family.
She added that she was sending her love for a collective “Goodnight Australia” to Young.
Tina Arena pays tribute to the man who encouraged her voice
Johnny Young’s influence extended well beyond the Minogue family.
Tina Arena, another major Australian performer whose early career was closely tied to Young Talent Time, also shared an emotional message following his death.
“I’m struggling to find the words today to express the profound loss of a man who allowed, and equally encouraged, me to find my voice!”
Arena said Young had left behind a legacy that those whose careers he helped shape would continue to honour.
Young’s program became an important launching point for a generation of Australian entertainers, with its alumni including Minogue and Arena.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute, saying Young had given Australia “the gift of joy” and describing Young Talent Time as a launchpad for an extraordinary generation of performers.
