Peter Overton and Jessica Rowe tipped for a surprise return to Today — but one small hurdle is still standing in their way

Nine’s search for the right combination to lead Today could be heading in an unexpected direction, with familiar television faces Peter Overton and Jessica Rowe reportedly being considered for a potential return to the breakfast couch.

According to New Idea, the husband-and-wife duo have been quietly sounded out about a possible fill-in hosting stint, although nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

The prospect of seeing them together on Today has already sparked plenty of interest — particularly given their long history with Australian television.

A familiar pair could be back on the couch

The speculation comes at a time of considerable change for Today.

Following Karl Stefanovic’s departure and Sarah Abo’s maternity leave, Nine has been trialling different presenter combinations as it considers the show’s next chapter.

Samantha Armytage and Tom Steinfort have reportedly been in contention for the permanent hosting roles.

But bringing Peter and Jessica together would offer Nine something quite different: two established television personalities who already have a genuine connection away from the cameras.

A television insider quoted by New Idea suggested the pair could prove popular with viewers because audiences already know and love them.

Rather than having to manufacture chemistry in front of the cameras, Peter and Jessica already have it naturally.

Why the idea is turning heads

Peter, 60, has spent decades as one of Australia’s most recognisable news presenters and has been the face of Nine News Sydney since 2009.

Jessica, 56, meanwhile, is remembered fondly by breakfast television viewers for her warmth, humour and refreshingly candid personality.

Together, they could bring a very different energy to the Today studio — one based less on polished television chemistry and more on the familiarity of a real-life couple.

And for Jessica, a return would carry an especially personal meaning.

Jessica has unfinished business with Today

Jessica previously co-hosted Today alongside Karl Stefanovic in 2006.

Her stint on the program was relatively short and came during a period of intense scrutiny surrounding the show’s ratings.

Years later, Jessica reflected on the experience on the No Filter podcast, admitting:

“I thought I’d failed.”

What initially felt like a painful professional setback, however, ultimately led her towards a different and more fulfilling chapter of her career.

Almost two decades later, the possibility of returning to the same breakfast television world would therefore represent quite a full-circle moment.

The one small hurdle

There is, however, one small obstacle standing in the way.

According to New Idea, Jessica isn’t entirely ready to fall back in love with the brutal 3am alarm starts that come with breakfast television.

The punishing hours are one reason a temporary return could make more sense than immediately taking on a permanent position.

A short fill-in stint would allow Jessica to experience the Today couch again without necessarily committing herself to the demanding routine of early-morning television.

Could a real-life couple be what Today needs?

For now, the possibility remains just that — a possibility. There is no confirmed deal for Peter and Jessica to host Today together.

But the idea has an undeniable appeal.

Peter brings years of experience in live television and news, while Jessica has the warmth and personality that made her a familiar presence in Australian homes.

And perhaps most importantly, they don’t need to pretend to know each other.

The chemistry is already there — the only question may be whether Jessica is willing to face those 3am alarms once again.
