Kyle Sandilands reveals the two heartbreaking family battles he was facing as his world with Jackie O fell apart
Behind one of the most dramatic chapters of Kyle Sandilands’ career was a deeply personal struggle few people could see.
As his nearly three-decade radio partnership with Jackie ‘O’ Henderson was collapsing, Kyle was also dealing with two serious family health crises — leaving him trying to make sense of both his personal life and a professional relationship that had suddenly fractured.
Two devastating family battles at once
Kyle revealed that his mother, Pamela, had been battling cancer while his relationship with Jackie O was deteriorating.
His mother had previously undergone treatment after melanoma was found under her arm. The cancer later returned and was discovered in her bowel, with doctors diagnosing it as stage four.
Kyle said his mother initially tried to hide the seriousness of her condition from him, continuing to attend family dinners as though nothing was wrong.
That changed when she was taken to hospital by ambulance in the early hours of the morning.
“She finally had to go to the hospital at 3 o’clock in the morning in an ambulance,” Kyle recalled.
The news was devastating — particularly because he was away on the Gold Coast with his wife and young son Otto when he learned his mother needed surgery.
And then came another family crisis
At almost the same time, Kyle was also worrying about his late father’s wife, Dianne, who was in the final stages of her life in Brisbane.
She required ongoing care and an oxygen mask, adding another layer of emotional pressure while Kyle was already dealing with his mother’s cancer treatment.
“So, mum needed care, she needed operations. Then my dad’s wife, she’s in the last stages of her life,” he said.
For Kyle, it was an extraordinarily difficult period — made even more confusing by what was happening with Jackie O.
“I had no idea what the hell happened”
While his family was facing serious health problems, Kyle was simultaneously trying to understand how his relationship with his longtime radio partner had reached such a dramatic breaking point.
Their 27-year partnership came crashing down following a public on-air confrontation, with the fallout eventually becoming part of a legal dispute involving ARN and Jackie O.
Kyle admitted he struggled to understand what had happened between them.
“And I was so confused – because still to this day I had no idea what the hell happened [with Henderson],” he said.
The timing, he revealed, made everything even harder to process.
A message he sent that nobody knew about
Despite the bitter fallout, Kyle revealed that he privately sent Jackie O a message during the dispute — without either of their lawyers knowing.
“The last message I sent to her on the sly… was that regardless of what comes out in court or what needed to be said, I’m good with you.”
His explanation for the gesture was surprisingly emotional.
Kyle believes Jackie may have felt she had no choice but to distance herself from him while the legal proceedings continue.
“That’s the only way I can justify it to myself without breaking down on the ground and crying,” he admitted.
The door is still open for Jackie O
Despite everything that has happened, Kyle insists he has not closed the door on his former co-host.
He said Jackie would always have a place on his new venture, whether for a guest appearance or potentially something more permanent.
“She may have taken a different path and have different wishes and wants in her life, and if that’s what she wants I wish her the best,” he said.
Then came perhaps his most revealing admission:
“But I’ll love her and respect her… regardless of whether she ever speaks to me or not.”
For two people who spent almost 30 years side by side on Australian radio, it was a striking glimpse at the affection that remains beneath the fallout.
A painful chapter — and a new beginning
Kyle says his mother has since recovered from her surgery and is getting stronger, although her recovery is expected to take time.
His stepmother remains seriously ill in Brisbane.
And professionally, Kyle is now moving forward with Kyle Sandilands Live, his new subscription broadcasting venture, which launched in August.
He says the new show will welcome a wide range of voices and even hopes to attract major names such as Elon Musk.
But behind the ambitious new chapter is a period Kyle describes as one of extraordinary confusion and emotional strain.
While audiences saw the radio fallout, the public arguments and the legal battle, Kyle was quietly dealing with something far more painful at home — two family health crises arriving at almost exactly the same time.
