Karl Stefanovic has been pranked on the Today show after being told there was going to be a major shakeup in the iconic Bunnings sausage sizzle.

The hardware store hosts a fundraising barbecue every weekend for different groups, organisations, and charities, and Rotary International has been involved in this for decades.

But the organisation’s head of membership, Andrew Best, told Karl and Sarah Abo with a straight face they would be moving away from meat sausages and could pull their support from Bunnings altogether.

“That’s what the community is telling us, that we need to be offering maybe some different products in our communities,” he said on the Channel 9 show.

“And that a barbecue is no longer just about the sausage or an onion.”

He said they might end up serving asparagus, broccolini, or even a fruit kebab.

Karl asked “in all seriousness” if Andrew and Rotary International were “ready for the backlash” for such a decision, especially considering how much money they pull in from the Bunnings sausage sizzle.

Andrew revealed they make $2.7 million each year during those barbecues, which goes into “building fences” and “filling out libraries with new books”.

He admitted with a cheeky grin that while it might seem like a wild suggestion, they wanted to “shift with the times”.

“$3.50 for a Bunnings sausage isn’t going to cut it in 2026,” he said.

It was unclear whether Karl was in on the joke or not, but he seemed seriously taken aback by the claims.

“Rotary does a terrific job, and I love the organisation, and all the volunteers are incredible…but I won’t have any of this,” he said.

Thankfully for him, a plate of Bunnings meat sausage sandwiches was brought out and Andrew revealed it was all just an April Fool’s Day prank.

“[Sarah’s] been winding me up for the last four hours,” Karl said, hinting the Channel 9 team tried to convince him the story was real.

“I don’t need to be wound up, fuel’s already gone through the roof.”

Andrew insisted the humble sausage sizzle at Bunnings is “here to stay”.

“Whether you want onion or not, that’s another question,” he told the hosts.

“Mustard, tomato, barbecue sauce, two pieces of bread or not. Rotary is going to serve them up for now and many years to come.”

Karl said he was “bitter” that he was pranked by his guest and co-host and called them “clever buggers”.

“I’m not happy about this,” he added.
