Two children under five are killed after a car ploughs into a pram in Cabramatta

Two young children have died and their mother has been injured after a car ploughed into the trio.

The children, aged one and five, were in a pram when they were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Joseph and Gilbert streets in Cabramatta, south-west Sydney, at 3.15pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics treated the children at the scene, and rushed them to hospital in a critical condition where they later died.

Their 33-year-old mother was treated for minor injuries.

The 56-year-old driver was uninjured and arrested before being taken to hospital under police escort for mandatory testing.

Fairfield City Police’s Acting Superintendent Timothy Calman said members of the public played a ‘phenomenal’ part in attempting to save the children.

‘We had a number of motorists stop and collectively tip the car onto its side in order to get one of the children free from underneath the vehicle,’ he said.

‘Bystanders assisted with CPR.’
