A decade of love, largely away from the spotlight
To viewers of The Dog House Australia, Tayla Meath was the warm, compassionate face who devoted herself to helping rescue dogs find new families.
Away from the cameras, however, Tayla shared a much more private life with her partner, Curtis.
The couple had been together for around a decade, according to reports following Tayla’s passing, and Curtis remained by her side through the extraordinary health battle that eventually changed almost every part of their lives.
Their relationship was rarely the focus of Tayla’s public profile. Her work, her love for animals and the dogs she helped were what viewers knew best.
But behind that public story was a relationship that became particularly significant during the years when Tayla needed someone beside her most.
A young woman building the life she loved
Before cancer entered her story, Tayla had already built a life around animals.
She worked with the Animal Welfare League NSW and became one of the animal matchmakers featured on The Dog House Australia, which premiered in 2021.
The role suited her deeply. Tayla wasn’t simply helping people choose a dog; she was helping animals that had already experienced uncertainty, abandonment or difficult circumstances begin again.
In a previous interview about the program, she spoke openly about the emotional side of shelter work — including seeing dogs struggle to understand why their owners had left them.
For Tayla, finding the right family was therefore about much more than a successful television moment.
It was about giving an animal another chance.
And while audiences came to know that side of her, much less was known about the person sharing her own life.
Then came a diagnosis that changed everything
Tayla was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, or ACC, in 2024, when she was just 27.
ACC is a rare form of cancer that develops in glandular tissue, including tissue in the head and neck.
Her illness followed years of throat problems and ultimately required major surgery, including the removal of part of her vocal cord and voice box.
For someone whose work depended so heavily on communicating with people and caring for animals, the impact was profound.
And for Curtis, the person who had shared Tayla’s life long before the television cameras arrived, it meant watching someone he loved navigate a future neither of them could have expected.
A marriage followed by an entirely different chapter
Tayla and Curtis eventually married, marking what should have been the beginning of a joyful new stage in their lives.
But the happiness surrounding their marriage was followed by an extraordinarily difficult period as Tayla’s health continued to deteriorate.
That contrast makes her story particularly poignant.
A wedding is supposed to represent everything that lies ahead — plans, adventures, ordinary days together and a future that feels wide open.
For Tayla and Curtis, that future soon became centred on hospitals, treatment, uncertainty and trying to make the most of the time they had together.
Yet the available accounts of Tayla’s final years repeatedly emphasise something important: her life did not become only about cancer.
She continued to care deeply about animals and the people around her.
Curtis was there as the world around them changed
By the time Tayla’s illness progressed, the couple had already shared years of ordinary life together — long before Tayla became known to television audiences.

Curtis wasn’t simply someone who appeared in Tayla’s final chapter. He was part of the life she had built before her diagnosis, when her biggest concerns were far removed from cancer.
He was her partner through the transition from a young woman working with rescue animals to someone facing an illness that would eventually force her away from much of the work she loved.
Tayla’s family and friends later described the period as the hardest chapter of their lives.
And Curtis was among those left to carry that chapter with her.
There was still Archie
There was another constant in their life together: Archie, their three-year-old Labrador.
For Tayla, that detail feels particularly meaningful.
She had spent years helping rescue dogs find people who would love them for life.
At home, she had her own dog — another reminder of the world she cared so deeply about.
Archie was part of the family Tayla leaves behind, alongside Curtis.
It creates a quiet symmetry in her story: the woman who spent so much of her life helping dogs find their forever homes had one waiting for her at home.
Tayla’s final chapter
Tayla’s health deteriorated significantly in 2026.
According to the fundraising campaign established to support her family, scans eventually showed that the cancer in her liver had grown significantly and caused multiple bile-duct blockages. Her treatment options became increasingly limited.
Tayla died on September 1, aged 30.
The news prompted an emotional tribute from The Dog House Australia, which remembered her for the “extraordinary love, kindness and care” she showed the animals she worked with.
The program said working with animals was not simply Tayla’s job — it was her passion and a huge part of who she was.
A love story that was never really about the spotlight
There are no grand public declarations that define Tayla and Curtis’s relationship.
Perhaps that is what makes their story so affecting.
Their love existed largely away from the television screen — through the ordinary years before Tayla became known to audiences, and then through a period when ordinary life became extraordinarily difficult.
Tayla spent her career helping animals find people who would stay.
In her own life, she had someone who stayed, too.
