Renowned relationship expert and psychologist Mel Schilling, a familiar face on the Australian edition of Married at First Sight for over a decade, has shared the devastating news that her battle with cancer has taken a grave turn. The 54-year-old revealed that the colon cancer she was first diagnosed with in 2023 has now spread to her brain.
Schilling, who also features on the UK version of the popular reality dating show, had recently announced her departure from Married at First Sight to focus on her health and family. At the time of her announcement in February, she was in the midst of filming the latest season in London, a testament to her dedication and spirit.
In a poignant social media update on Friday morning, Schilling disclosed the heartbreaking progression of her illness.

“Over Christmas… I began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side,” she wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by a touching photograph of herself with her husband Gareth Brisbane and their daughter Madison.
Following extensive medical investigations, Schilling received the news that the cancer had metastasised to the left side of her brain. Despite undergoing subsequent radiotherapy sessions, her oncology team has delivered the difficult prognosis that there are no further treatment options available.
“Hearing those words changes everything,” Schilling confessed. “So that’s where I am now. My light is starting to fade – and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love. Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult and I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me. I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.”
Schilling expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received since embarking on this challenging journey.
“At the outset of this journey, so many of you sent the most wonderful messages of support. They have meant more than I can ever properly express and have helped shape the mindset I’ve needed to keep fighting. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
A Journey of Resilience and Setbacks
The initial diagnosis of colon cancer in 2023 offered a glimmer of hope. Schilling had revealed that the tumour, described as the size of a lemon, was successfully removed during surgery, and she was given the “all clear.” However, this reprieve was short-lived.
In late February 2024, a routine scan revealed the unsettling presence of small nodules in her lungs, indicating that the cancer had returned and spread. This marked the beginning of a gruelling period of intensive treatment.
For the past two years, Schilling has courageously undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy, all while continuing her demanding work on the reality television series. This unwavering commitment to her profession, even in the face of such immense personal adversity, highlights her remarkable strength.
“I underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and was later told I was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specific to my gene type, due to start in March 2026,” Schilling shared previously on Instagram. “Once again, my optimism soared that I might beat this thing.”
The devastating news that the cancer had spread to her brain came in December 2025, forcing her hand in stepping away from Married at First Sight due to her deteriorating health.

An outpouring of Support
The broadcasting network Nine, which airs Married at First Sight in Australia, released a statement expressing their deep sadness at the news. They lauded Schilling as “a woman of extraordinary depth, kindness, and an unshakeable spirit.”
“Mel’s honesty and her ability to face life’s hardest moments with such strength and openness is something we admire,” the statement read. “She isn’t just a colleague; she is family. Our thoughts, love, and strength are with Mel, her husband Gareth, and her daughter Maddie during this incredibly difficult time. Mel, we are all behind you.”
Similarly, Channel 4, the UK broadcaster of the show, acknowledged Schilling’s significant contribution and the affection she commands from all corners of the MAFS universe. A statement from the channel described her as “hugely valued and much loved,” adding that “everyone involved in MAFS, from the producers and contributors to the viewers, love and respect her.”
The resilience and grace with which Mel Schilling is facing this profound personal challenge continue to inspire. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity for courage and the profound importance of love and support during life’s most arduous trials.
