Channel Nine is set to snatch Australian Survivor in a massive million-dollar TV shakeup

Channel Nine is reportedly exploring a deal to acquire the broadcast rights for Australian Survivor from Channel 10 as of May 6, 2026. The acquisition is contingent upon the return of former host Jonathan LaPaglia to the franchise, following a decline in viewership for the current broadcaster.

Production company Endemol Shine reportedly pitched the format to Nine after viewing figures dropped. According to reports from New Idea, network insiders suggest that LaPaglia is an essential component of the identity and success of the program.

“Nine loves the format, but they’re clear on one thing, JLP is part of its DNA,” a source told New Idea.

The network source further clarified the requirements for any potential transition of the reality competition to a new broadcaster.

“If the show moves, they want him front and center again,” a source told New Idea.

Channel 10 is currently scheduled to proceed with the 2027 season, with filming planned for Malaysia between mid-July and early September. Industry sources indicate this may be the final season for Channel 10 before Nine implements a “back to basics” strategy with tighter casting.

Meanwhile, the American version of the franchise is currently airing its 50th season as of May 6, 2026. Contestant Jonathan Young, a veteran of Season 42, remains one of the final nine players with no votes cast against him at tribal council.

Young has faced scrutiny regarding past gameplay during his original season. Fellow contestants Maryanne Oketch and Lindsay Dolashewich previously accused him of misogynistic behavior according to reports from Swooon and TV Insider.

“Jonathan’s a misogynist. Or at least it felt that way on the island,” Lindsay Dolashewich told Entertainment Weekly.

The statement from Dolashewich noted that while they were initially close, she perceived a trend in his behavior starting around the fifth day. Young’s performance in Season 50 continues as the field of contestants narrows toward the final tribal council.
