Ahmed Al Ahmed has addressed questions regarding the funds raised in his support as he continues to recover from serious injuries sustained while intervening during the December 14 incident.
The 43-year-old was wounded while confronting an attacker at Bondi. Doctors have treated his injuries, though he faces the possibility of permanent damage and requires further medical care.
Mr. Al Ahmed has received global praise for his courage, which prevented further tragedy. While recovering, he was supported by a global fundraiser that attracted over 43,000 donations.
However, in a recent social media post, he responded to those critical of the fund.
“When I see negative comments… or some media outlets focusing only on the benefits I received… I feel deep sadness,” he said.
“They forget the severe injuries I sustained. I live with that pain day and night.”

Mr Al Ahmed said he also cannot move his hand or fingers
“The hardest part is the uncertainty regarding my recovery. Doctors have told me the loss of movement in my hand may be permanent,” he shared.
“What money or honor can ever equal this loss? Is there anyone among the critics who would trade their physical health for money?”
He emphasized that he has no regrets, as he acted out of humanity and the values he was raised with. “But it hurts to see some people view this as a business transaction instead of understanding the sacrifice.”
Mr. Al Ahmed is currently in the United States attending a charity gala in New York. The event raises funds for vulnerable families, with individual tickets priced from $1,000 USD ($1,485 AUD).
However, the trip has presented challenges, with reports that he experienced medical complications with his injury while abroad.

But Mr Al Ahmed meeting newly-minted Mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani
Mr. Al Ahmed shared updates showing him resting, noting that he had to cancel scheduled meetings due to complications with his recovery.
He admitted to feeling discouraged at times but found hope in the knowledge that he helped protect others and in the support he received from well-wishers.
During his visit to the US, he met with notable figures, including filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Australian Ambassador Kevin Rudd.
Meanwhile, Gefen Bitton, who also intervened during the event, was granted permanent residency in Australia. This status provides him access to necessary healthcare support as his treatment continues.
“We’re seeing small improvements daily, as he is now more awake. Every step counts,” a fundraiser update noted.
The December 14 tragedy at Bondi Beach resulted in the loss of 15 lives during a community celebration.
