The devastating discovery was made on Thursday, days after the young child went missing from the residence on a quiet Saturday night. Authorities state that Lewis, 47, was present at the Old Timers accommodation in Alice Springs where the child was resting.

A parent of Kumanjayi, who was away at the time, received the agonizing news. “The devastation is absolute,” a relative shared, noting the parent’s desperate wish to be surrounded by loved ones during this time of mourning.

Unable to endure the painful memories, the primary guardians have made the difficult decision to leave the compound they called home for seven years. “It’s too much. I cannot go back there,” one shared, remembering Kumanjayi as a deeply loved and beautiful soul.

The immediate family is currently seeking refuge in safe locations and with trusted friends before planning a permanent relocation to Yuendumu.

Lewis was taken into custody late Thursday evening at an Alice Springs residence. Following a severe community altercation that required urgent medical attention, he was subsequently transported to a medical facility in Darwin.
