For 25 years, McLeod’s Daughters has remained one of Australia’s most recognisable television dramas — and now, the gates of Drover’s Run are opening once again.
Stan has officially confirmed that the beloved rural drama is returning as a Stan Original, with the announcement unveiled at the Nine 2027 Upfronts.
And while the first glimpse is deliberately short, one haunting line may be enough to bring the world of Drover’s Run rushing back.
A familiar place — with a new story
The first teaser offers almost no answers.
A woman is seen riding horseback through the Australian outback as a voice quietly says:
“A place you remember.”
Her identity remains unknown, and Stan has not yet announced the new cast or revealed a release date.
What has been confirmed is that the new series will build on the world created by Posie Graeme-Evans, 25 years after Tess and Claire McLeod first appeared on Australian screens.
Stan says much has changed since viewers last visited Drover’s Run — but the landscape and the spirit of strong, resilient women facing life, love and connection in the modern world will remain at its heart.
That leaves one very big question hanging over the revival: who will be riding back into Drover’s Run?
The original story became far bigger than a TV series
The original McLeod’s Daughters premiered in 2001 and ran for eight seasons, concluding in 2009 after 224 episodes.
At its centre were half-sisters Claire and Tess McLeod, who were brought back together after years apart when they inherited their father’s vast South Australian property, Drover’s Run.
What followed was a story about family, friendship, love, loss and the determination to keep the farm alive — surrounded by the unmistakable landscape that became almost a character in its own right.
Stan still describes the original series as the story of two sisters reunited at a vast outback cattle property, where they build an all-female workforce at Drover’s Run.
Now, more than 15 years after the finale, that world is being opened up again.
Could the old faces return?
This is where the mystery becomes even more intriguing.
No original cast members have officially been announced for the reboot.
Bridie Carter, who played Tess, has previously spoken enthusiastically about the possibility of returning to the world of McLeod’s Daughters. She suggested that there could be a way to revisit Tess and Nick, explore what happened to the farm and even introduce their offspring alongside new characters.
Carter has also pointed out that modern television has shown how established fictional worlds can continue through different generations.
And she is not the only former cast member who has imagined a way back to Drover’s Run.
Jessica Napier and Rachael Carpani once imagined different futures
When New Idea reunited Jessica Napier and Rachael Carpani in 2024, both actresses spoke about their affection for the series and the possibility of returning if the right story could be found.
Napier played Becky Howard, while Carpani portrayed Jodi Fountain-McLeod.
Napier left the series during its third season and never returned to Drover’s Run for the finale. Looking back, she said she had been young and wanted to avoid becoming defined by a single role — although, ironically, Becky became the character she was remembered for most.
Carpani, meanwhile, did return for the original finale.
Her return came with barely any preparation. She recalled flying from Los Angeles to Sydney and then Adelaide with only days of notice before filming — only to discover that Jodi was returning with a pregnancy storyline.
It was one of those unexpected moments that summed up just how unpredictable life at Drover’s Run could be.
One unanswered question still bothers fans
There is also a piece of McLeod’s Daughters history that Napier has never quite forgotten.
Becky had shared a particularly meaningful relationship with Claire, yet when Claire died, Becky was not present for her funeral.
Napier later said she was never asked to return and admitted she did not know what had happened behind the scenes.
For her, it felt especially sad because Becky and Claire had shared a deep friendship and mutual respect.
What happened to Becky and Jodi?
Years after leaving the series, both actresses had their own ideas about where their characters might have ended up.
Napier imagined Becky eventually finding the stable family life she had always wanted, with children and a successful life alongside Jake.
Carpani had a very different vision for Jodi.
Although Jodi ultimately settled down with Matt, their storyline involved faking their deaths and entering witness protection. The finale established that they were no longer hiding, but Carpani once admitted she almost preferred not knowing exactly what came next.
She imagined Jodi continuing to live an unpredictable life — perhaps even giving birth while still on the run.
In a way, that uncertainty felt perfectly suited to Jodi.
But the new Drover’s Run may belong to a new generation
That may be the most interesting possibility of all.
Rather than simply recreating the original series, the new McLeod’s Daughters appears positioned to explore what happens when the world of Drover’s Run moves forward.
Bridie Carter previously suggested that the characters could have changed, their offspring could enter the story and an entirely new group of people could become part of the McLeod legacy.
That idea now carries a little more weight.
Because Stan has confirmed the return of the world — but not yet revealed exactly whose story we are about to follow.
The mystery begins with one woman on horseback
For now, there is no confirmed answer about who is behind that first teaser image.
No cast list.
No release date.
And no confirmation yet that the familiar faces fans remember will return.
Just the Australian landscape, a rider moving through the outback — and four words that instantly take viewers back to a place they thought they had left behind:
“A place you remember.”
Drover’s Run is coming back.
But after 25 years, the real question may no longer be whether we remember the place.
It is who will be waiting there when we return.
