For Tayla Meath, caring for animals was never simply a job. It was one of the clearest expressions of who she was — and in the final chapter of her life, one beloved dog remained part of the world she held closest.

His name was Archie, a three-year-old Labrador who shared a home with Tayla and her husband, Curtis.

Now, following Tayla’s passing at just 30, Archie has become part of the memories left behind by a young woman whose life was so deeply intertwined with animals.

Archie was there for a life built around animals

Tayla became known to Australian audiences through The Dog House Australia, where she worked as an animal shelter worker and matchmaker, helping rescue dogs find people who could give them a permanent home.

The series premiered in 2021 and quickly became known for the emotional connections between abandoned dogs and their potential new families.

For Tayla, that work was deeply personal.

She had a remarkable ability to see the individual personality of each animal and understand what kind of home might suit them. The program later remembered her for the “extraordinary love, kindness and care” she showed the dogs.

But away from the cameras, she had her own dog waiting for her at home.

Archie was not one of the rescue dogs Tayla helped place. He was hers — a beloved part of the life she shared with Curtis, her partner of 10 years.

The years that changed everything

Tayla had already been dealing with serious health problems for years when she was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2024, aged just 27.

The rare and aggressive cancer affects glandular tissue, often in the head and neck. Tayla had experienced years of throat problems and underwent surgery that removed part of her vocal cord and voice box.

Despite everything, she continued trying to live on her own terms.

A fundraising campaign established to support Tayla and her family later revealed that she continued making memories with the people — and the dog — she loved.

In March 2025, money raised during her health battle helped Tayla and Curtis take a honeymoon to the Maldives, her first overseas trip.

And Archie remained part of the life she was determined to keep living.

As Tayla’s health deteriorated in 2026, the cancer spread to her liver.

In June, she became seriously unwell, with doctors finding that the cancer had grown significantly and was causing multiple bile duct blockages. According to the fundraising page, there were eventually no further treatment options for those blockages, and a palliative care team became involved.

Yet even as her circumstances became increasingly difficult, her family said Tayla continued to spend precious time with those closest to her.

That included Archie.

A final update from her fundraising campaign said Tayla had been able to have more time with her friends, her family, her husband — and her “beloved Archie”.

She celebrated milestones, made memories and continued living as fully as she could.

That detail is perhaps one of the quietest, but most moving, parts of her story.

For someone who had spent so much of her life helping other people find the right dog, she had her own companion waiting at home through the hardest years of her life.

A final goodbye

Tayla died on September 1, surrounded by the people she loved most.

She was 30.

Her family later said they were learning to live with the unimaginable loss of their daughter, while preparing the celebration of life she had wanted.

Tayla is survived by Curtis and Archie.

The news of her passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from viewers, colleagues and animal lovers who remembered the warmth she brought to The Dog House Australia.

The program said working with animals “wasn’t just a job” for Tayla. It was her passion, and she loved helping dogs get the second chance they deserved.
