Beloved Australian actor Rodger Corser has officially weighed in on the intense media speculation positioning him as the next permanent co-host of Channel Nine’s Today show.
The morning program’s anchor chair has remained the most talked-about piece of real estate in Australian television following the explosive departure of Karl Stefanovic earlier this year.
With Nine News presenter Tom Steinfort currently steering the broadcast on a temporary basis alongside a rotating roster of co-hosts, network watchers have been desperate to learn who will permanently step into the coveted role.
While public chatter has frequently framed the gig as “replacing Karl” due to the former host’s massive star power, industry insiders have quietly tipped Corser as the ideal contender to take over from Steinfort and lock down the flagship desk for good.
Now, speaking on Stellar’s Something To Talk About podcast with host Sarrah Le Marquand, the 53-year-old television favorite has set the record straight on where he stands.
Setting The Record Straight On The Breakfast Desk
Addressing the widespread industry rumors that he was being lined up for Nine’s top morning job, Corser candidly admitted the news caught him completely off guard.
“I know who didn’t see that coming – me or Channel Nine. So I think that answers the question.”
While Corser has occasionally filled in on Nine’s morning lineup in the past, he firmly ruled out stepping into the high-pressure environment of full-time breakfast broadcasting.
The former Doctor Doctor star pointed out that leading a major national news program requires a very specific set of professional skills that fall outside his expertise as an actor.
“I’m not a journalist. I respect that journalism is its own art form, its own trade.
People study it and dedicate their lives to it.
So I think someone with a journalistic background is essential for that role.”
Happy To Be A Guest, But Not The Anchor
Despite putting an end to the anchor desk rumors, Corser revealed he is still more than happy to pop up on morning screens for quick guest appearances or short fill-in stints to support his industry mates.
He pointed to his friendly relationship with Today Extra host David Campbell as the exact level of breakfast TV involvement he prefers.
“Happy to fill in when DC’s got a gig or something like that, and come in for my two episodes or whatever.
But ‘no’ for the top job.
I think they will look elsewhere. It’s nice to be in the conversation, sure.”
His definitive refusal leaves Channel Nine’s talent hunt wide open as network executives continue to evaluate their long-term strategy for the program following months of desk changes.
A Long-Awaited Return To The Stage
Rather than setting a 4:00 AM alarm for breakfast television, Corser is preparing to dive back into live theater for his next major career chapter.
The veteran star is returning to the stage after a 20-year hiatus, taking on a leading role in the theatrical adaptation of the iconic story The Shawshank Redemption.
It marks his first major stage project since starring in the Australian production of Rent two decades ago.
Corser admitted that balancing his family life with artistic passion was the driving force behind his long break from the theater world.
“I’ve gotta earn money for a family of five.
And theatre doesn’t pay the same; you do it more for the love.
It was always a timing thing, and then it just felt right.”
Family Comes First On Father’s Day
Away from the spotlight and stage lights, Corser remains focused on his most cherished role of all: being a dad.
The actor shares three children—Budd, Cilla, and Dustin—with his actor wife Renae Berry, as well as a grown daughter, Zipporah, with his ex-wife, singer Christina Anu.
Speaking wryly about celebrating Father’s Day with his family, Corser shared a relatable look at life with teenagers in the household.
“I’ve got one in primary school. But I’ve got jaded teenagers in high school so you’re lucky if they scribble on a card.
You’re lucky if they get out of bed, really.”
Instead of a quiet morning in bed, the busy father revealed his weekend schedule remains completely packed with junior sports commitments.
“Sundays for us is our sport day. So besides maybe opening up a quick present from the school stall, we’re putting footy boots on and we are out the door.
That’s what Father’s Day will look like for me.”
