After years of making headlines in the swimming pool, Cate Campbell has stepped into a very different spotlight.

The Australian Olympic great has married her longtime partner Adam Kerr in a small, relaxed celebration on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast — surrounded not by a crowd of thousands, but by the people closest to them.

And while the bride and groom were at the centre of the day, one particularly fluffy member of their family was never far from the action.

A wedding that was unmistakably Cate

Cate, 34, and Adam exchanged vows on Saturday, August 29, at Palm Creek Estate in the Noosa Hinterland.

The couple chose an intimate celebration with around 40 of their closest family and friends, keeping the day deliberately relaxed rather than turning it into a large-scale production.

It was a fitting choice for Cate, who has embraced a quieter pace of life since stepping away from elite swimming.

Rather than chasing grandeur, the wedding centred on the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast and the people who have shared the couple’s journey.

Cate wore a custom wedding gown designed by Sunshine Coast designer Gemma Leakey, adding another distinctly local touch to the celebration.

From Olympic pressure to a much quieter kind of happiness

For much of her life, Cate was accustomed to enormous stages.

She represented Australia at four Olympic Games and became one of the country’s most decorated swimmers, winning eight Olympic medals, including four golds.

Her elite swimming career came to an end in 2024 after she missed selection for the Paris Olympics, closing a remarkable chapter that had included world records and major international titles.

Marriage now marks something entirely different: a new chapter away from the relentless demands of elite sport.

Cate has previously spoken about how much she values life outdoors and being close to the water, and she and Adam have built their home on the Sunshine Coast.

For someone who spent decades living by training schedules, races and international competition, the slower rhythm appears to suit her.

The proposal was just as understated

Adam, a geologist and geotechnical engineer, proposed to Cate during a sunrise walk at their local beach in July 2025.

Cate later revealed that she had no idea what was coming.

As they watched the sunrise, Adam told her he had a question to ask. She assumed it might be something ordinary — perhaps about their home, their garden, their dog or dinner.

Instead, he got down on one knee.

Cate said yes, describing the proposal as a “complete and wonderful surprise” and later calling it the perfect way to begin the next chapter of their lives.

A love story away from the sporting spotlight

There is also something unusual about Cate and Adam’s relationship.

When they first met, Adam reportedly had little idea of just how famous the woman in front of him was.

Cate has previously joked that he insists he never Googled her and was not star-struck by her sporting achievements.

That lack of connection to the sporting world appears to have been something Cate valued.

Adam does not come from the elite sporting environment that defined so much of her life, giving their relationship a sense of normality away from the pool.

Bronte by her sister’s side

Cate’s younger sister, fellow Olympic champion Bronte Campbell, was one of the most important people beside her on the day.

Bronte served as maid of honour and later shared her joy at watching her older sister marry Adam.

The sisters have experienced an extraordinary amount together — from growing up and training in the same sporting world to competing for Australia on the biggest international stages.

For Bronte, however, seeing Cate become a bride was a particularly special moment.

She described watching her sister marry Adam as an “absolute joy” and said she was incredibly proud of the life Cate had built with him.

And then there was George…

There may have been a bride, a groom and a maid of honour, but another family member appears to have quietly stolen plenty of attention.

Cate and Adam’s beloved cocker spaniel, George, was part of the wedding celebrations.

Cate has previously described the puppy as a “bundle of chaotic fluff” and openly admitted she is obsessed with him.

Bronte also made a special mention of George when celebrating her sister and new brother-in-law, jokingly including the much-loved dog among the family.

It seems that even on one of the biggest days of Cate’s life, there was always room for the little character who has become such an important part of her new world.

A small celebration for a very big new beginning
