Samantha Armytage was ready to return to Today — then a p:ainful health setback changed everything
Samantha Armytage was preparing to return to the Today couch when a completely unexpected accident put her plans in doubt.
The 49-year-old television presenter revealed she had fractured her ankle after a seemingly ordinary household task went badly wrong, leaving her in a brace and with her foot badly swollen.
Despite the painful setback, Samantha appeared determined not to let it derail her television commitments.

A routine chore ended in a painful injury
Samantha explained to her Instagram followers that she injured herself while taking the rubbish out over the weekend.
There was no dramatic accident or glamorous explanation.
Instead, she simply missed the bottom step while walking outside one morning and twisted her ankle.
“I wish I had a sexy story for you, but I don’t.”
She said she had been wearing runners at the time and had not even been wearing heels when the accident happened.
The injury was more serious than she initially expected.
According to Samantha, she fractured her ankle “in a couple of places” and suffered significant ligament damage.
“I have torn all the ligaments away from the bone and part of the bone away.”
The photo that had followers looking twice
Samantha later showed followers the extent of the injury, filming herself from the couch with her injured leg elevated and secured in a brace.
Her foot and ankle were visibly swollen and inflamed.
True to form, however, she met the uncomfortable situation with humour rather than self-pity.
Alongside the image, she joked about her week-old Logies spray tan and the unexpected interest the photograph might attract online.
Some of the messages she received were far stranger than the sympathy she had been expecting, prompting Samantha to share screenshots with her followers.
Rather than hiding the awkwardness of the situation, she appeared to laugh along with it.
Determined to get back on air
The timing could hardly have been worse.
Samantha had been expected to return to Today as Nine continued testing potential combinations for its breakfast program.
Yet despite sitting at home with her ankle elevated, she remained hopeful that the injury would not keep her away from the studio.
“I am endeavouring to be back on air tomorrow for the Today show.”
She joked that the production team would simply have to work out how to disguise the medical boot.
“We’ve just got to work out how to cover the boot.”
Her upbeat attitude was striking given the extent of the injury.
Samantha also acknowledged that many people were dealing with far more serious circumstances, saying she knew there were “a lot of people out there doing it a lot tougher than I am this week.”
Samantha’s Today comeback comes at an important moment
The injury comes as Nine continues to work through a period of uncertainty surrounding the future Today hosting line-up.
Karl Stefanovic departed the program earlier this year, while Sarah Abo subsequently stepped away on maternity leave.
Nine has since trialled a number of presenters as it searches for the combination capable of restoring momentum to the breakfast program.
Samantha and Nine News presenter Tom Steinfort were among the pairings tested earlier this month.
Their stint reportedly delivered an improvement in the ratings, adding further speculation that Nine could be considering the duo for a more permanent role.
For Samantha, a return to breakfast television would mark another significant chapter in a career that has already taken her from Sunrise to Farmer Wants a Wife and, more recently, The Golden Bachelor Australia.
A setback — but hardly the end of the story
For now, Samantha’s focus appears to be on recovering while trying to keep her professional commitments on track.
