Bizarre Sam Kerr twist as Matildas skipper speaks out after reports she’s set to leave Chelsea. Matildas captain Sam Kerr has got tongues wagging amid reports she is set to sign with an American team.
Matildas captain Sam Kerr has thrown doubt on reports she is set to sign with an American expansion team, departing Chelsea in a women’s football transfer stunner.
The champion striker has appeared to talk down the story, saying on Snapchat: “Don’t believe everything you read in the media man, they know a decision before me”.
It’s unclear whether Kerr is saying the story is not true, or if she just wanted the announcement to be made differently.
Kerr is out of contract at the WSL powerhouse and Ten reported she will instead sign with the Denver Summit, a brand new NWSL side.
The Summit, partially owned by NFL great Peyton Manning and skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin, and Boston Legacy joined the league this season bringing it to 16 teams.
The 32-year-old Kerr was the all-time leading goalscorer in the US competition, playing at the Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC and Chicago Red Stars before her move to England.
She has spent six seasons at Chelsea, leading them to five WSL titles and three FA Cups, but has played reduced minutes since returning from an ACL injury.
They were knocked out of the Champions League on Thursday after a 3-2 aggregate loss to Arsenal.
