Part 2 — A Cafeteria Assault Reveals the Secret Behind Maya Carter

The military dining hall had been loud only seconds earlier, filled with conversations, clattering trays, footsteps, and the constant noise of soldiers eating lunch.

Then Daniel Reed threw the stainless-steel tray.

It slammed directly into Maya Carter’s face and upper chest with a violent metallic crash.

Food exploded across her cheeks, hair, neck, and olive-green uniform.

Several strands of her dark-brown hair stuck against her face as the entire dining hall fell into complete silence.

Daniel stood over her, breathing heavily, his jaw still clenched.

Maya did not move.

She slowly raised one hand and wiped a streak of food from her cheek.

Then she reached into her uniform pocket and pulled out a small white cotton handkerchief.

As she unfolded it, the nearest soldiers noticed the strange black symbol embroidered in one corner.

It showed a tactical combat knife positioned vertically above a pair of angular military wings, with a small coded designation underneath.

Whispers immediately spread through the room.

“What the hell is that?” one soldier quietly asked.

Maya ignored them.

She calmly wiped the food from her face.

Then the cafeteria doors opened.

Captain Thomas Hale walked inside.

He took three steps before noticing the confrontation.

Then he saw the handkerchief.

Hale stopped.

For the first time, his controlled expression changed.

His eyes locked onto the embroidered symbol, and the color seemed to drain slightly from his face.

He approached Maya slowly.

“Where did you get that?” he asked.

Maya looked directly at him.

“It’s mine, sir.”

Hale stared at the symbol for several seconds.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel immediately straightened.

“Sir?”

Hale pointed toward the floor.

“Pick it up.”

Daniel hesitated before bending down and retrieving the tray.

“Then report to my office.”

“Sir, she—”

“I didn’t ask what she did.”

Daniel fell silent.

Hale stepped closer.

“Do you know who you just assaulted?”

Daniel looked at Maya.

Then back at Hale.

“No, sir.”

Hale’s voice became quieter.

“And that’s exactly your problem.”

Daniel followed him out of the dining hall, but Maya remained behind.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone was staring at her.

Maya simply folded the handkerchief and placed it back inside her pocket.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel stood outside Captain Hale’s office.

He knocked.

“Enter.”

Daniel stepped inside.

Hale was standing behind his desk, holding an old military file.

Daniel immediately noticed that the file looked unusually worn.

There was no name printed on the front.

Only the same black symbol from Maya’s handkerchief.

Hale placed it on the desk.

Daniel stared at it.

“Sir, what is this?”

Hale opened the file.

Inside were photographs of soldiers, military facilities, classified documents, and several newspaper clippings with sections blacked out.

Then Daniel saw something that made his stomach tighten.

One of the photographs showed a younger Maya Carter.

She was wearing a completely different uniform and standing beside three senior military officers.

Daniel looked at Hale.

“How old is that picture?”

“Nine years old.”

Daniel stared at the photograph again.

“She was a lieutenant?”

Hale shook his head.

“No.”

He turned another page.

“She was seventeen.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“It should have been.”

Hale closed the file.

“Nine years ago, a classified military intelligence program was compromised.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Someone inside the program was leaking operational information to an outside network,” Hale continued.

“Thirty-seven personnel were investigated.”

“Seven disappeared.”

“Two were killed.”

“And one person discovered the leak.”

Daniel slowly understood.

“Maya.”

Hale nodded.

“Her father was a senior intelligence officer.”

“He was murdered before he could identify the person responsible.”

“Maya found the evidence he left behind.”

Daniel stared at the file.

“She was seventeen.”

“Yes.”

“How did the military even know about her?”

“They didn’t.”

Hale’s eyes hardened.

“She came to us.”

Daniel looked confused.

Hale opened another photograph.

It showed Maya standing inside an underground facility.

“She had memorized an access code her father had hidden from everyone.”

“That code led investigators to the evidence that exposed the entire operation.”

Daniel swallowed.

“So what does the symbol mean?”

Hale finally answered.

“It belonged to a unit that officially never existed.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why does she still have it?”

Hale’s expression became serious.

“Because she was the last surviving member.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“The last?”

Hale nodded.

“Everyone else connected to that unit disappeared.”

Daniel looked toward the closed office door.

“And Maya?”

Hale’s voice lowered.

“Maya was placed into protective military service under a new identity.”

Daniel suddenly understood why Hale had reacted so strongly in the cafeteria.

“Then why is she here now?”

Hale looked down at the file.

“Because the person who ordered those disappearances was never caught.”

Daniel froze.

Hale continued.

“For nine years, everyone believed the case was dead.”

“But three days ago, someone sent a message to military intelligence.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What message?”

Hale turned the file around.

There was a single photograph.

It showed the same black knife-and-wings symbol.

Underneath it were six words.

WE KNOW WHERE MAYA CARTER IS.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Who sent it?”

“We don’t know.”

Hale closed the file.

“But we know one thing.”

Daniel waited.

“The message was sent from inside this base.”

Suddenly, a knock came from the office door.

Both men turned.

Maya stood outside.

Her face was clean now, but a faint stain remained on her uniform.

She looked directly at Hale.

“Sir, we have a problem.”

Hale opened the door.

“What happened?”

Maya reached into her pocket and removed the white handkerchief.

But this time, she turned it around.

There was something stitched onto the opposite side.

A second symbol.

Hale’s expression changed instantly.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is that?”

Maya looked at him.

“The symbol of the person who betrayed my father.”

Hale stared at the embroidery.

Then Maya quietly added one final sentence.

“And I know exactly who it belongs to.”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Maya’s eyes followed his.

A military police officer was standing at the far end of the corridor.

He was watching them.

Then he slowly turned and walked away.

Hale immediately reached for his radio.

“Lock down the building.”

The hallway doors slammed shut.

Alarms began echoing through the base.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“You knew someone was watching you.”

Maya nodded.

“I’ve known since I walked into the dining hall.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

Maya looked at him calmly.

“Because I needed them to believe I was still hiding.”

Hale stared at her.

“You used the confrontation.”

Maya nodded.

“I needed someone to make a scene.”

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

“Unfortunately, he volunteered.”

Daniel lowered his head in embarrassment.

Hale looked at both of them.

Then he picked up the classified file.

“For nine years, we thought we were hunting the traitor.”

He looked directly at Maya.

“But you weren’t waiting for us to find him.”

Maya shook her head.

“No, sir.”

A faint, determined expression appeared on her face.

“I was waiting for him to come back for me.”

Outside the office, the alarm continued to sound.

But somewhere inside the locked military base, a phone began ringing.

Nobody answered it.

It rang again.

Then a message appeared on the screen.

TARGET CONFIRMED.

Hale looked at Maya.

Maya looked at Daniel.

Then she quietly said,

“Now we know who came for me.”

The lights suddenly went out.

When the emergency lights came on, the corridor was empty.

The military police officer was gone.

So was the classified file.

And on Hale’s desk remained only one thing.

The white handkerchief.

The black embroidered symbol had been cut away.

Someone had taken the evidence.

And this time, Maya Carter was no longer the person being hunted.

She was hunting them.
