Part 2 — She Warned Him About the Cave, But the Real Danger Was Already Inside

The deep ocean was almost completely silent, except for the distant groan of underwater currents moving between the rocks.

Far below the surface, a female naval special operator moved through the darkness wearing only dark tactical dive gear and a compact breathing system strapped tightly to her back.

Her name was Lieutenant Mara Vance, and she had been underwater for nearly forty minutes.

Ahead of her, another diver was swimming toward a massive crack between two formations of black rock.

He was Lieutenant Daniel Cross, an experienced naval officer who had spent years leading underwater reconnaissance missions.

Mara suddenly noticed something that made her stop.

She raised one hand and gave him a sharp signal.

STOP.

DON’T GO THAT WAY.

Daniel turned around and stared at her through his diving mask.

Mara pointed directly toward the enormous underwater cave.

Daniel looked at the cave, then back at her.

Even underwater, Mara could see the arrogant smile on his face.

He shook his head and continued swimming.

Mara immediately followed him.

Daniel reached the entrance of the cave first.

Then something moved behind him.

A gigantic dark shape emerged from the blue-black water.

Daniel turned around.

His eyes widened.

A massive shark was charging directly toward him.

He tried to swim away, but the creature was already only a few meters behind him.

Mara reacted instantly.

She slammed into Daniel and pushed him sideways just as the shark rushed past them.

The force of the movement sent Daniel spinning through the water.

Mara grabbed his vest and pulled him toward a group of rocks.

“Move!”

She pointed urgently toward cover.

“Move!”

Daniel finally followed her.

The shark circled once.

Then, strangely, it ignored them.

Instead, it turned around and disappeared into the cave.

Daniel stared after it.

His breathing became faster.

Mara pulled him behind a large rock and pointed toward the cave entrance.

Daniel looked through the darkness.

His expression changed.

Hundreds of thin steel cables were stretched between the rocks.

Some were covered with camouflage netting.

Others were almost invisible against the dark ocean floor.

Daniel slowly realized what would have happened if he had entered the cave.

The shark had not been attacking them.

It had been moving through the only safe path.

Daniel looked at Mara.

She pointed deeper inside the cave.

A tiny red light was blinking between the rocks.

Three seconds passed.

Blink.

Blink.

Blink.

Mara raised three fingers.

Then she pointed at her wrist.

“Three minutes.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What is that?”

Mara looked directly into his eyes.

“The reason I told you not to go there.”

A deep metallic vibration suddenly rolled through the water.

The rocks beneath them trembled.

Daniel looked toward the cave.

The red light continued blinking.

But now he could see something else.

A second red light had appeared.

Then a third.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“There are more of them.”

Mara nodded.

“Six devices.”

Daniel looked at her in disbelief.

“How do you know?”

For the first time, Mara hesitated.

Then she reached inside a waterproof pouch attached to her thigh.

She pulled out a small photograph sealed inside transparent plastic.

Daniel recognized the image immediately.

It showed the same cave.

But the photograph had been taken from inside.

Several divers were standing beside a metal container.

Daniel looked at Mara.

“Where did you get that?”

“My brother.”

Daniel froze.

Mara’s brother had been part of a classified naval recovery team that disappeared six months earlier.

Officially, the team had been declared lost after a submarine accident.

Daniel had never believed the official report.

“Your brother came here?”

Mara nodded.

“He wasn’t looking for treasure.”

She pointed toward the blinking devices.

“He was looking for something the Navy never told us about.”

Another vibration shook the cave.

The countdown on Mara’s waterproof wrist device dropped below two minutes.

Daniel looked at her.

“What happens when the timer reaches zero?”

Mara answered quietly.

“The cave collapses.”

Daniel stared at the cables surrounding them.

“And those wires?”

“They trigger the charges.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“But why would anyone destroy the cave?”

Mara looked deeper into the darkness.

“Because something is still inside.”

They moved carefully between the steel cables.

Every movement had to be precise.

One wrong touch could activate the system.

As they approached the center of the cave, Daniel noticed a large metal container buried beneath the sand.

The markings on its side had been deliberately scratched away.

Mara brushed the sand from the surface.

Daniel recognized the remaining symbol.

It belonged to a classified naval weapons program that had officially been shut down fifteen years earlier.

“This program doesn’t exist,” he whispered.

Mara looked at him.

“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.”

Suddenly, a faint tapping sound came from inside the container.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Someone was inside.

He looked at Mara.

“Is that your brother?”

Mara shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

They opened the container.

Inside was not a person.

It was a black military data case surrounded by emergency oxygen canisters.

Mara pulled it out.

Then she noticed something underneath it.

A small identification tag.

She picked it up.

Her hands began to shake.

The name on the tag was Daniel Cross.

Daniel stared at his own name.

“That’s impossible.”

Mara looked at him.

“Your name was on the recovery team’s manifest.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“I wasn’t on that mission.”

“I know.”

The cave suddenly shook harder.

The timer showed forty-three seconds.

Mara grabbed the data case.

“We have to leave.”

Daniel looked at the case.

“What about the charges?”

Mara pulled a small device from her belt.

“I can stop them.”

“Can you?”

She looked at the timer.

“No.”

They raced toward the cave entrance.

The steel cables began vibrating around them.

The shark suddenly appeared again.

Daniel froze.

Mara grabbed his arm.

“Don’t fight it.”

The shark swam directly past them.

Then it disappeared through a narrow opening between the rocks.

Daniel finally understood.

The shark had been using that passage because it was the only route that wasn’t connected to the explosive wires.

They followed it.

The timer reached ten seconds.

Nine.

Eight.

Seven.

Mara pushed Daniel through the opening.

Six.

Five.

Four.

She followed.

Three.

Two.

One.

The underwater cave exploded behind them.

A massive cloud of sand and debris swallowed the darkness.

The pressure wave threw them through the water.

When everything finally became still, Daniel slowly opened his eyes.

Mara was beside him.

The data case was still in her hands.

Daniel looked at her.

“You saved my life twice.”

Mara shook her head.

“I saved your life once.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Mara looked at the data case.

“The first time, you saved yourself.”

Daniel stared at her.

She opened the case.

Inside was a small encrypted recorder.

Mara activated it.

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

“If you’re hearing this, the cave has been destroyed.”

Daniel recognized the voice immediately.

It was his own voice.

His face went completely pale.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, if you’re alive, don’t trust the mission commander.”

The message ended.

Daniel slowly looked at Mara.

“That recording was made before I ever came here.”

Mara nodded.

“And that’s why I was sent here.”

Daniel stared into the dark ocean behind them.

For the first time, neither of them knew who they could trust.

Mara secured the recorder inside her vest.

“Now we go back.”

Daniel looked at the destroyed cave.

“Why?”

Mara looked toward the surface.

“Because whoever built that cave knew we would eventually find it.”

She paused.

“And they left us a message.”

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“What message?”

Mara’s expression hardened.

“That they already know we’re here.”

The two divers began swimming toward the surface as the remains of the cave disappeared behind them.

Neither of them noticed the tiny red light still blinking beneath the rubble.

Then another light turned on.

And another.

Somewhere deep beneath the ocean floor, a second countdown began.
